Ocean freight dynamics are shifting rapidly in September 2026, with major carriers imposing vital surcharges that directly alter landed-cost calculations for global agri-commodity trade.

CMA CGM has introduced a Low Water Surcharge (LWS) of USD 150/TEU effective October 1, 2026, originating from South America West Coast to global destinations including North Europe, the Mediterranean, Indian Subcontinent, and US East/Gulf Coasts. Additionally, CMA CGM will apply a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) of USD 100/TEU for China to Durban cargo starting September 17, 2026.

Meanwhile, Maersk has announced substantial PSS revisions effective October 1, 2026, for routes from the Indian Subcontinent and Middle East to North America, ranging from USD 8,000 to 11,800/container for dry containers, alongside specific Reefer PSS rates up to USD 10,000. Maersk will also apply a PSS on Mediterranean routes to North America starting October 7, 2026.

Traders, exporters, and forwarders must immediately revise their landed-cost models for October procurement.
